Observations on the feeding activities of the West African Manatee, Trichechus senegalensis Link, 1795 in a semi-wild environment

The presence of the West African manatee, Trichechus senegalensis in a semi-wild holding facility Little Stream Farm, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, presented an opportunity to study directly, aspects their biology, which hitherto were little known. This was conducted identify plant food preferences and feeding behaviour as reflection what may approximate activities wild. selected plants weighed (wet weight kg) with spring balance batches 3kg per species offered manatee for specified period (initially 24 hours, then 4 hours 10 hours). Of 15 presented, Emilia sonchifolia, Commelina diffusa, Nymphaea sp., Panicum laxum, Eleusine indica Rhynchosia sp. had high preference levels while quantity Chromolaena consumption minimal. Bambusa Heliotropium indicum, Ludwigia abyssinica Hyptis lanceolata ignored by animal on repeated presentations. Studies day-time night-time showed difference quantities consumed. However, maximum 7kg observed at daytime day 14 days trial. result that event rescue fostering temporary facilities, these plants’ checklists come handy materials. They also important considerations whose natural growth propagation should be encouraged areas designated conservation.
